A New Chapter at Diebel’s Sportsmens Gallery

By Claire Diebel

Since 1954, Diebel’s has been a trusted name in fine tobacco and gifts in Kansas City. It was my grandfather, Fred Diebel, who first opened the shop with a simple philosophy: offer quality products, treat people with respect, and take pride in what you know. My dad, Curt, carried that philosophy forward for decades, expanding the store, deepening relationships, and becoming a fixture in our city’s cigar culture. Now, it’s my turn.

As the third generation to take the reins of this business, I’m honored, and, truthfully, a little awed, to be building on a legacy that’s meant so much to our family and community. My name is Claire Diebel, and whether you’re a longtime customer, a fellow tobacconist, or just discovering our shop, I want to personally welcome you to our blog, and into the story of Diebel’s.

A Family Built on Tobacco, Trust, and Taste

I grew up around the smell of cigars and pipe tobacco. I remember the hum of the store, the steady rhythm of regulars coming through the door, and the quiet reverence my dad and grandfather had for the products we sold. These weren’t just commodities, they were craft, tradition, and conversation-starters.

Fred was a gentleman of the old school, sharp, dignified, and quietly passionate about serving people. Curt, my dad, has been the heart of the business. He has an unmatched memory for customers, an encyclopedic knowledge of the industry, and a way of making people feel right at home. He’s still involved, of course, his voice is in everything we do, and always will be.

But as retail evolves, and as new generations discover the beauty of a well-made cigar or a carefully carved pipe, it’s time for the next chapter.

What the Blog Is and Isn’t

This blog is not here to lecture or sell. It’s here to share: what we’re loving in the humidor, what we’re learning, who we’re meeting, and how we’re honoring the craft. It’s a way for our staff to showcase their expertise, from pairing guides to pipe tips, and for us to bring the Diebel’s experience to more people, no matter where they live.

We’ll highlight cigars we’re excited about, events we’re proud of, promotions worth checking out, and stories that make this business so rewarding. From casual how-to's to deep dives into tobacco growing regions, you’ll get a mix of history, hospitality, and honest recommendations, all grounded in the taste and standards that define Diebel’s.

What This Means to Me

Taking over a family business is both a privilege and a responsibility. There’s heritage to preserve, but there’s also innovation to pursue. My background includes years of travel, study, and work in places like China, Italy, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. I bring a global appreciation for culture, craftsmanship, and aesthetics, and I’m applying that to everything from our product selection to our events, branding, and soon, our online shop.

But at the core, my goal is simple: to keep Diebel’s a place for people with taste. Whether you love cigars, pipes, or one of a kind gifts, you belong here.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for being part of our story. I look forward to what’s ahead, and I hope this blog becomes a small but meaningful way we stay connected, from Kansas City to wherever you are.

Warmly,
Claire Diebel
